Big Sur Cottage

This was a project to create a small building that was to be part of a larger cluster of inhabited structures that fit into a small wooded space.  The water tank shelter is also part of this cluster.  We were certainly concerned with a simple aesthetic that fit with the natural color palette, but we were also wanting it to be relatively fireproof.  The roof is retrofitted from recycled metal roofing, the soffits and facia are custom bent sheet metal, and the exterior walls are cement board.  One of the challenges was to paint the cement board in a way that made it look older and more interesting.  This was achieved with a layered and hand-rubbed finish, effectively giving it an antiquing effect.
